Bringing a new baby home can be an extremely anxious time for new parents. The nurse is in a unique role to help support the early care of the newborn at home through parent teaching. We’re happy to help you help parents with a great review and up to date evidence based practices for newborn care.

This two-part series will first focus on Part A: Care of the Newborn 101, including information on sleeping patterns, feeding cues. crying, feeding, burping; and best practices for diapering, bathing, swaddling and safe baby-wearing options. Evidence-based recommendations for infant sleep, bed sharing, and car seats will be discussed and finally we’ll review how to help parents evaluate common beanie baby products so you can offer guidance to parents to make informed purchasing decisions. Part B: Common Issues and Concerns will cover cradle cap, diaper rash, thrush, milia, digestive issues, feeding issues,  and strategies for managing gas, colic, reflux, and constipation. This section will have a special emphasis on how to help parents respond to medical issues and understand normal versus when urgent medical evaluation is needed. Social media trends will be discussed to identify common concerns and misconceptions circulating among new parents online.

Objectives for Part A: Newborn Care 101
1. Understand Normal Newborn Behaviour including typical newborn sleeping patterns, feeding cues, crying, reflexes and more.
2. Learn the Basics of Feeding & Burping to help parents recognize what’s normal versus what may need medical attention.
3. Learn Essential Newborn Care Skills including best practices for diapering, bathing, swaddling (pros & cons), proper holding techniques & safe babywearing options.
4. Discuss Evidence-Based Infant Sleep recommendations, Bedsharing, and Carseat safety guidelines
5. Evaluate Common Baby Products so you can offer guidance on which baby gadgets & gizmos are helpful, safe, or unnecessary, and empower parents to make informed purchasing decisions.

Objectives for Part B: Common Newborn Care Issues & Concerns
1. Address Frequently Asked Questions and Popular Social Media Trends to identify common concerns and misconceptions circulating among new parents online.
2. Recognize and Manage Common Newborn Skin Conditions including cradle cap, diaper rash, thrush, milia, and erythema toxicum etc
3. Understand common feeding Issues and briefly cover feeding-related concerns that may contribute to common symptoms of concern.
4. Understand common digestive issues in newborns and discuss causes and management strategies for gas, colic, reflux, and constipation.
5. Identify and Respond to Common Medical Concerns in Newborns including signs, symptoms, and basic management of jaundice, low blood sugar, and Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS).
6. Gain confidence educating parents on what is normal vs when urgent medical evaluation is needed.
7. Promote Safe Infant Practices and Reduce Health Risks for newborns

Angela Grant Buechner BA, BScN, RN, IBCLC

Angela Grant Buechner (she/her) is a Registered Nurse, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Doula and Educator. She has worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at a major Toronto teaching hospital as a nurse for over 25 years, has worked as a Childbirth Educator for Peel Public Health, and since 2009 has worked as an Lactation Consultant in both the NICU and private practice.

Angela is a published author of a textbook chapter on Breastfeeding Challenges in the NICU, and scholarly articles about Lactation.  She is the former President of the Canadian Lactation Consultant Association, is a Breastfeeding Educator for Health Care Professionals at Mount Sinai Hospital, and has presented at the International Lactation Consultants Association Conference.

She  is the mother of three exclusively breastfed children and she knows the benefits and rewards of breastfeeding/chestfeeding, but also understands that there are often challenges to overcome. As a Lactation Consultant she understands the importance of providing
non-judgmental, timely and practical support to help patient reach their feeding goals. Her team at Nutmeg Consulting  provides in-person Birth & Postpartum support and in-person and virtual Lactation support to clients across Canada and internationally.
