Description:
Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs ) can occur during pregnancy or in the first year postpartum. Those at highest risk are women who have had previous mood and anxiety disorders, but the disorder can affect anyone: between 10 & 20% of pregnant women & new mothers are affected.  Because women are expected to be joyful about this new stage of life, many are reluctant or feel ashamed to report symptoms. Others worry about the safety of medications during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and still others fear they risk having their child removed.  This can lead to under-reporting  symptoms. Untreated mental illness in pregnancy & postpartum carries the risk of low infant birth weight, preterm delivery, increased risk of childhood emotional and behavioural problems, and poor infant learning and cognitive development. Join Samantha Waxman, PhD, C.Psych, PMH-C for her important review of PMADs, screening tools, and a discussion of safe & effective treatments.
