Objectives:
1. Review pathophysiology of cancer—how it starts (oncogenesis), how it spreads (metastasis) and growth and differentiation of cells.
2. Review the the role of genetics and environment in diagnosis and treatment choices i.e targeted gene therapies; viruses, bacteria, hormones and chemicals.
3. Explain the grading and staging of tumours; and the nomenclature of Cancer
4. Examining the science: the explosion of cancer information and myths on the internet, for example:
– Do cell phones cause brain tumours? Do breast implants increase the risk of breast cancer? Can you get oral cancer from dental X-rays?
– Can you get “body” cancer from the TSA scanner at the airport? Does bike riding trigger testicular cancer? What does “sex” have to do with prostate cancer?

Description:
This webinar provides an update and overview on the pathophysiology of cancer, how it starts, how it spreads, the role of oncogenes, the role of the environment (viruses, hormones, chemicals, etc.) as well as many other facts about the growth and differentiation of cells. Nomenclature, grading and staging of tumours will be explained. Specific cancers will be discussed in each section, including breast ovarian, endometrial and cervical cancer; prostate, testicular, colorectal, kidney and bladder cancer; and lung cancer, skin cancer, leukemia, Hodgin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.

Barb Bancroft, RN, MSN, PNP
Barb Bancroft is a widely acclaimed nursing teacher who has taught courses on Advanced Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, and Physical Assessment to both graduate and undergraduate students. Also certified as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, she has held faculty positions at the University of Virginia, the University of Arkansas, Loyola University of Chicago, and St. Xavier University of Chicago. Barb is known for her extensive knowledge of pathophysiology and as one of the most dynamic nursing speakers in North America today.
