Description:
It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and to a certain extent so are nonverbals. They can set the mood for an encounter, they can communicate feelings, thoughts, and even desires; they can alter perceptions, they can even make others want to spend time with us – all without ever saying a word. The one thing we all share in common is a need to communicate effectively. From how we greet each other, to everyday interactions, we communicate primarily nonverbally. Not only do we look for nonverbals in others and they in us; we are also influenced by them. We think our words are the most important aspect of communication and yet the research clearly shows, our body language triumphs where words fail us. What are nonverbals? In essence anything that communicates a thought, an idea, a feeling, or a mood but is not a word. In that case we are surrounded by nonverbals: from the clothes we wear, to the color of our office, to how the furniture is laid out, to our good manners. All of these things are communicating something to others and they speak loudly about ourselves to others. It is also how we conduct due diligence and assess for trustworthiness and competence.

Joe Navarro’s presentation will open your eyes to what every health professional should know about nonverbal communications as well as body language. He will explore the early social research that ushered in the use of nonverbals in business and politics and what it means for us today. He will also break down the primary behaviour that all healthcare professionals should know and master to make them more effective communicators. So whether you manage a dozen people or interact primarily one on one, there is a place for nonverbal communications in your skill set. Whether it is empathy you want to express, or you are conducting due diligence, or you merely want to manage perceptions, nonverbal communications are invaluable. Lastly, Joe Navarro will reveal the five most important things you can do each day to differentiate yourself from others and in so doing transform yourself to become truly exceptional.
