Objectives of Part A: <\/b>The Science
\n<\/span><\/strong> Upon completion of this session the learner will be able to:<\/span>
\n1. Define what constitutes early life adversity and trauma in the NICU for the baby and family.
\n<\/span>2. <\/span>Describe the biological relevance of a trauma informed paradigm in the NICU for the baby and family.
\n3. List 3 long term consequences of early life adversity and exposure to toxic stress in the NICU for the baby and family.
\n4. Identify 3 evidence-based strategies that mitigate the experience of early life adversity and toxic stress in the NICU for the baby and the family.
\n5. Commit to one small first step towards becoming trauma informed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Objectives of Part B: The Soul
\n<\/span><\/strong>Upon completion of this session the learner will be able to:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/b>1. Define the concept of trauma stewardship.
\n2. Describe the biology of “bearing witness”.
\n3. Differentiate between the what it means to be the ‘walking wounded’ and the ‘wounded healer’.
\n<\/span>4. Explain the difference between biocidic and biogenic care practices.
\n5. List 3 strategies to cultivate compassion.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms. Coughlin has over 40 years of nursing experience beginning with her 7 years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corp and culminating with her current role as president and founder of Caring Essentials Collaborative, an organization committed to transforming the experience of healthcare for babies and families around the globe through a trauma informed paradigm.<\/p>\n

Ms. Coughlin is a published author. Her work includes the seminal paper introducing the concept of core measures for developmentally supportive care, national and international peer -reviewed papers and most recently Trauma-Informed Care in the NICU: Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines for Transdisciplinary Neonatal Clinicians endorsed by NANN<\/strong><\/em> as well as the 2nd edition of Transformative Nursing in the NICU \u2013 Trauma Informed, Age-appropriate Care.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

In her role as president of Caring Essentials Collaborative<\/strong><\/em>, Ms. Coughlin has educated, inspired, and empowered more than 20,000 interdisciplinary clinicians from over 20 countries to transform the experience of healthcare for infants, children, and families.<\/p>\n

Most recently, Ms. Coughlin and her interdisciplinary faculty have created an assessment-based certificate program endorsed by the NIDCAP Federation International,<\/em> the National Association of Neonatal Nurses<\/em>, the Council of International Neonatal Nurses<\/em>, and the National Association of <\/em>Perinatal Social Workers<\/em> in accordance with standards established by the Institute for Credentialing Excellence, to distinguish individuals as Trauma Informed Professionals.<\/p>\n
