Objectives of Part A: <\/b>Indications for & Modes of Mechanical Ventilation
\n<\/span><\/strong>At the conclusion of the presentation learners will be able to:
\n1. Understand the regulation and mechanics of breathing
\n2. Compare and contrast spontaneous breathing and positive pressure ventilation.
\n3. Describe the indications for mechanical ventilation.
\n4. Discuss airways used in invasive mechanical ventilation.
\n5. Indicate equipment, monitoring and medications required to facilitate intubation.
\n6. Define the terminology associated with mechanical ventilation
\n7. Compare and contrast the four common modes of ventilation, including parameters set, indications and complications.
\n8. Understand what PEEP is and the advantages and disadvantages associated with its use.<\/p>\n

Objectives of Part B: Assessment, Complications, & Weaning
\n<\/span><\/strong>At the conclusion of the presentation learners will be able to:
\n<\/b>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Discuss key aspects of assessing a mechanically ventilated patient
\n2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Interpret ABG with respect to mechanical ventilation.
\n3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Identify procedural steps for suctioning an intubated patient.
\n4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Describe the local and systemic complications associated with mechanical ventilation.
\n5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Indicate criteria and predictors for successfully weaning a patient off mechanical ventilation.
\n6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Describe methods of weaning a patient from mechanical ventilation.
\n7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Indicate equipment and monitoring required for extubation.<\/p>\n

Description:
\n<\/b>The care of the mechanically ventilated patient can be a significant part of clinical practice in a critical care unit. Caregivers are charged with not only managing the patient’s needs but to also to understand a significant piece of equipment – the ventilator. In Part 1 of this this two part webinar, we’ll explore the indications for ventilation, various airways, the four most common modes of mechanical ventilation and PEEP. In part 2 of the webinar, we’ll discuss assessment of the ventilated patient, ABG’s in ventilation, suctioning, complications, criteria and methods for weaning and extubation. \"\"Joan Harris, RN, MSc, MHSc <\/strong><\/p>\n

Joan Harris has worked in critical care for 30 years and is currently the course coordinator for the Advanced Studies in Critical Care Nursing (ACCN)<\/em> certificate program at Mount Royal University in Calgary. Her experience includes work in general systems intensive care units, and specialty ICUs such as neuro, trauma, burns, cardiac and CVICU. Prior to her current role, Joan was a clinical nurse educator for the general systems, neuro, trauma and burns ICU at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. She completed her RN in Edmonton at the Royal Alexandra Hospital School of Nursing; she also has a BSc in Honours Physiology from the University of Alberta and a MHSc in Bioethics from the University of Toronto. She is a member of the Canadian Association for Critical Care Nurses (CACCN) and has attended and presented at the CACCN conference numerous times. She has also presented at the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) annual NTI conference. Working in the ACCN program at MRU has allowed her to combine her passion for academia with her passion for Critical Care Nursing.<\/p>\n
