\n<\/b>Obesity and type 2 diabetes are currently two health problems that are associated with considerable increase in morbidity and mortality. Both diseases are closely related and very difficult to control by current medical treatment, including diet, drug therapy and behavioural modification. Bariatric surgery has proven successful in treating not just obesity but also in significantly decreasing overall obesity\u2010associated morbidity as well as improving quality of life in severely obese patients. In this webinar, we’ll explore the indications and contraindication for bariatric surgery, specific pre-op care and consultations; types of bariatric surgery available, why each is chosen and what the research says about outcome of each. Further, we’ll discuss post-op care and food regimen, supplements; and patient support; and what the research says about average weight loss, changes in health indicators, and quality of life.<\/p>\n

Dr. Shahzeer Karmali, MD, MPH, FRCSC, FACS, FASMBS, DABS
\n<\/strong>
\nDr. Karmali is a minimally invasive gastrointestinal\/bariatric surgeon based at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. He is a Professor, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Calgary in 2002 and Fellowship training in minimally invasive surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston. He serves as the surgical director of the Edmonton Bariatric Specialty clinic. He is the chair of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons Laparoscopy and Endoscopy Committee and serves a leadership role in SAGES and ASMBS. Clinically he completes advanced minimally invasive procedures for a wide variety of gastrointestinal diseases, including: GERD, Paraesophageal hernia, Achalasia, Gastric tumours, Colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, Abdominal wall hernia, Surgery for morbid obesity (gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy). He has over 220 peer reviewed publications and over 200 peer reviewed abstracts. He speaks nationally and internationally on Obesity Management.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
