Description:
\n<\/b>One of the the most concerning diagnoses for med-surg, critical care, pediatric and perioperative nurses to encounter is chest trauma<\/b><\/i>. It’s one of the most common traumatic injuries in non-intentional trauma and\u00a0 comes with the highest mortality; in some studies, up to 60%.\u00a0 Chest trauma can be a result of penetrating or blunt trauma.<\/i> Blunt trauma, on the whole, is a more common cause of traumatic injuries and can be equally life-threatening.\u00a0 Most blunt trauma is managed non-operatively, whereas penetrating chest trauma requires operative interventions. Injuries to all thoracic structures also need to be considered; ribs, clavicle, trachea, bronchi, esophagus, arteries including the aorta, and veins need to be evaluated. Possible injuries can run the gamut from pneumo, hemo and tension pneumothorax, flail chest, tamponade, aortic dissection and more. She is currently employed at WakeMed Health and Hospitals in Raleigh, North Carolina where she oversees the clinical activities, outcomes and performance improvement for the organization’s Level 1 trauma program. She is actively engaged at the bedside throughout the trajectory of care, and is consulted on specialty populations to include spinal cord injury and geriatrics. Nicole is a published author, and has presented at the local, state and national level on a variety of emergency and critical care topics, and is known for her energetic and approachable style.
