Description:
Up to twenty percent of all newborns are exposed prenatally to alcohol, illicit drugs, and prescription opioids. Identifying the mother and her newborn are the first steps required for individualized treatment for the specific drugs. Neonates are extremely sensitive to the environment which must be altered by creative nursing interventions. Nurses can potentially have greatest impact, since women are most likely to be receptive to treatment while pregnant or immediately postpartum.

A graduate of Sacred Heart Nursing School, Gonzaga and Washington State Universities, Maureen Shogan has experience as an NICU manager, transport nurse, clinical educator and parenting educator. Maureen has served on the editorial boards of Neonatal Network, Mother Baby Journal, and JOGNN, and has taught at national and regional workshops for NANN, AWHONN and others. Maureen has worked with pregnant and parenting moms for over 20 years and was a consultant to the Washington and Idaho Departments of Child Welfare and Social Services. Maureen has worked extensively with pregnant and parenting moms with substance use disorder and was a consultant to the Washington and Idaho Departments of Child Welfare and Social Services.
